DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrive at Manali 
Arrive in Manali in the morning and settle in. Spend the evening getting acquainted with your bike, running through the checks and making sure everything is set for the road ahead. A short shakedown ride around town, a briefing over dinner, and you are ready to roll.

Day 2 – Manali to Shoja
Gear up for the first leg of your adventure as you leave Manali and ride towards  Shoja, a small village nestled amidst dense forests in the Seraj Valley. Enjoy the scenic route that takes you through lush green valleys, winding roads, and charming villages. As you ascend, the landscape transforms, offering panoramic views of the majestic mountains. Enjoy the cool breeze and stunning views of the mountains as you make your way to Shoja. Shoja is a tiny hamlet tucked into deodar and oak forest at the foot of Jalori Pass — quiet, green and a world away from the crowds of Manali

Day 3 – Shoja to Rakchham via Rampur
Start with a climb over Jalori Pass, a short, sharp mountain crossing right out of camp, then drop down through orchard country to Rampur on the banks of the Sutlej. Follow the river east into Kinnaur, where the landscape starts to change — the green gives way to cliffs, and the road is cut straight into the rock face. At Karcham, turn off into the Baspa valley and climb to Rakchham, a small village of wooden houses sitting between the river and the peaks.

Day 4 – Rakchham to Nako via Chitkul
A short morning ride up the Baspa takes you to Chitkul, the last inhabited village on the old Indo-Tibetan trade route. Time here for chai by the river and photographs before you turn around and head back down the valley. Rejoin the Sutlej and ride the dramatic stretch through Spillow and Pooh to Khab, where the Spiti river meets the Sutlej, then climb the famous switchbacks to Nako. The village sits around a small lake at 3,600m, with an old monastery at its heart — your first proper night at altitude, so take it easy.

Day 5 – Nako to Dhankar to Mud via Gue
A big day, and one of the finest on the trip. Drop down to Sumdo and take the short detour to Gue, a remote village that guards the naturally preserved 500-year-old mummy of a Buddhist monk, still seated in meditation. Cross into Spiti proper and stop at Tabo, home to a thousand-year-old monastery famous for its murals. Next comes Dhankar, an old fort monastery clinging to a cliff above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers — one of the most spectacular settings in the Himalaya. Finally, turn into the Pin Valley and ride to Mud, the last village on the road and the gateway to the snow leopard country beyond.

Day 6 – Mud to Langza to Komic to Hikkim to Kaza
Ride back out of the Pin Valley and climb onto the high plateau above Kaza for a loop through three of the highest villages in the world. Langza is watched over by a giant Buddha statue looking out across the valley, and the fields around it are full of marine fossils from the ocean floor this land once was. Komic has a monastery and not much else at over 4,500m, and at Hikkim you can post a card home from the highest post office on earth. Roll down into Kaza in the evening.

Day 7 – Kaza to Chandartaal via Key Monastery & Kunzum La
An early start, because today has both the sightseeing and the pass in it. First stop is Key Monastery, the postcard image of Spiti, stacked up a conical hill above the river — worth a stop inside for butter tea and the view from the roof. Climb on to Kibber and cross Chicham Bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Asia, with the gorge dropping away beneath your wheels. Then drop back to the valley floor and turn west, riding out of Spiti through Losar and up to Kunzum La at 4,590m. Spin the prayer wheels at the temple on top, descend to the Chandratal turn-off and park at the campsite. Walk up to the lake in the late afternoon — the water changes colour as the light goes, with the whole bowl of mountains sitting reflected in it. The cold comes down fast once the sun drops, so it is hot soup, rajma-chawal and a campfire (subject to firewood), then thick blankets and a night under a very big sky.

Stay at Chandrataal Camp

Day 8 – Chandartaal to Chattru to Manali via Atal Tunnel
Say goodbye to the lake and take on the roughest and most fun stretch of the trip — the run down through Batal and Chattru, with loose rock, river crossings and glacier melt across the road. Regroup at Chattru for a last plate of maggi in the mountains, then hit tarmac at Gramphu and ride through the Atal Tunnel to pop out in a completely different world on the Manali side.
